Two leaders agree on an Action Plan for the equal and effective participation

An Action Plan for the equal and effective participation[/B] of women in the solution of the Cyprus problem was agreed by the two leaders, Nicos Anastasiades and Ersin Tatar, according to a statement by the United Nations Press Representative for Cyprus, Alim Siddiq.

The statement said that, in response to the request of the United Nations Security Council in its resolution 2587 (2021), the Greek Cypriot leader, Nicos Anastasiades and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, agreed on an Action Plan "on ways to ensure the full, equal and meaningful participation" of women in the Cyprus settlement process".

The Action Plan, it says, "was developed by the Technical Committee on Gender Equality and includes recommendations based on three key questions: how to ensure the full, equal and meaningful representation of women; how to work with civil society, including women's organisations, to ensure that their views are heard; and how to include a gender perspective in the Cyprus settlement process".

According to the statement, on 27 January, in its resolution 2618 (2022), the Security Council endorsed the Joint Action Plan to ensure women's participation in the peace talks and encouraged the parties to ensure that women's needs and views are taken into account in a future settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Finally, it is reported that the Technical Committee for Gender Equality will present the Action Plan and invite civil society, including women's organisations, to an online meeting soon to start a discussion on the future.
