[B-2]Plenary voted to amend legislation on police recruitment 32 MPs voted in favour of the bill, with 13 abstentions[B-3]
[B-4]The Plenary passed the "Police (Amendment) (No. 5) Law of 2021", which regulates recruitment issues in the Police;[B-5][B-6][B-7]32 MPs voted in favour of the proposed law tabled by EDEK MP Kostis Efstathiou, while there were 13 abstentions.[B-8][B-9][B-10]At the same time, the debate and vote on legislation concerning the filling of the posts of mayor, community mayor and member of municipal and community councils, which is vacant before the upcoming local government elections in 2024, was postponed. A vote on harmonizing legislation concerning the Competition Protection Commission was also postponed.[B-11][B-12]With regard to the Police Bill that was passed, it aims to amend the Police Act to [B-13]provide clear authority for the Council of Ministers to be able to issue regulations regarding the handling of technical, educational and scientific matters relating to the procedures for evaluating candidates for appointment.[B-14][B-15][B-16]Speaking in plenary, MP [B-17]Kostis Efstathiou[B-18] said that the proposal seeks to clarify the landscape regarding the ability of the police to proceed with the assignment of specific tasks of a scientific or other nature, since many competitions exercises and examinations for the recruitment of new police officers were found to have been conducted in excess of the legislation, resulting in a gap that is covered by the current legislation.[B-19][B-20]DIKO MP [B-21]Panicos Leonidou[B-22] said that the proposed law is in the right dimension and comes to fill a huge gap resulting in more than 100 recruitments being annulled in the administrative court in the last recruitments. The law proposal puts things in order, he added, in order to avoid the overstepping of authority on the part of police bodies.[B-23][B-24]AKEL MP [B-25]Aristos Damianou[B-26], acknowledging the sincere intention of Mr Efstathiou, who tabled the proposal, to address a problem which he said the police had caused to itself. However, he said they would abstain as they would wait to see how the Police and the Ministry of Justice would handle the matter in the coming weeks, adding that they would have to propose solutions[B-27].
[B-28]DISY MP[B-29] Fotini Tsiridou[B-30] said the party welcomes the proposed law and supports it in order to improve the legal framework for future proceedings. At the same time, she noted that at the same time, the case of the 100 police officers for whom a review is being conducted is proceeding according to the administrative law and the procedure will be followed very properly[B-31][B-32]Source: CNA[B-33][B-33]
