Amnesty International has called on US President Joe Biden to close the US military's Guantanamo Bay detention centre in Cuba, which is celebrating 20 years of uninterrupted operation this month.

This centre represents arbitrariness, injustice and torture, the international non-governmental human rights defence organisation said. According to Amnesty International, Mr Biden should close it down and bring those involved in torture of detainees and other illegal activities at the centre to justice.

There are currently 39 inmates remaining at the centre. It was opened during the days of Republican former President George W. Bush and to which alleged jihadist terrorists were taken after the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. Many of them never saw charges brought against them or were brought to trial. Mr Bush's successor, Democrat Barack Obama, had expressed an intention to close the centre, but was met with fierce resistance in the US Congress and failed.

Republican former President Donald Trump wanted the Guantanamo Bay detention centre to remain open. Joe Biden, who was Mr Obama's vice president, is trying to push for its closure. Ahead of the 20th anniversary of the opening of this facility as part of the so-called war on terror, Amnesty International organised demonstrations yesterday, Saturday, in several countries. The first detainees were transferred to the centre at the US military base on 11 January 2002.
