Erdogan and Tatar are preparing a new challenge in Varosha in the midst of the economic crisis - They proceed to a new, illegal one, opening of another area in the enclosed city
While Turkish Cypriots suffer from inflation in Turkey and the continuous devaluation of the Turkish lira, the economy in the occupied territories relies exclusively on the economic packages offered by Erdogan.
This is how they pay the so-called civil servants, how they maintain the occupying force of 38,000 soldiers. It is said that when Erdogan sneezes, Tatar in the GCC catches a cold and all Turkish Cypriots with him. It is also true that the Origen Turkish Cypriots, that is, the inhabitants of Cyprus before the invasion and before the alteration of the population by hordes of Turks who came from the depths of Anatolia, do not have much sympathy for Tatar, did not vote for him and consider him Erdogan's subordinate and responsible for all the evils that have befallen them, the economic hardship and isolation from the international community.
Nevertheless, Tatar, having the backing of Erdogan, again offers a show (since he cannot offer bread) to Turkish Cypriots by proceeding with the opening of another area of the enclosed town of Varosha.
He announced it again on New Year's Day when he called Erdogan to wish him a Happy New Year, telling him that the opening of the enclosed city of Varosha was one of the most important developments for the Turkish Cypriot "people" in 2021, noting that the opening would continue despite the initiatives of the "Cypriot administration", as he calls the government of the Republic of Cyprus. And he wants to do it now that ExxonMobil's drilling rigs have started drilling in the Cypriot EEZ and Eni's drilling rigs are being prepared, ignoring Ankara's lionizing and threats.
Work has begun
A new entry point to Varosha on Independence Avenue towards Ermou Street, near Famagusta Town Hall, is being opened by Tatar in cooperation with the occupation forces in the enclosed area of Famagusta.
The so-called cleaning and repairing of the streets and buildings has already begun so that everything will look like before (or close to before) in the new fiesta he is organizing. A truck with a detachable cabin (left-handed - a trademark of having been carried from Turkey) has been placed at the crossing point, a crossing very similar to the one that already exists near the Constantia Hotel (which was one of the best in free Famagusta, with its white sand beach).
The "initiatives" for the opening of Varosha concern an area of 3.5%, where the military zone status has been illegally abolished, namely 174,646 sq.m. This is an area known to Cypriots as the Agios Nikolaos area with its cathedral covering the outskirts of the large church at the entrance to the city.
The rightful owners
Slowly, inch by inch, measure by measure, day by day, the occupation forces are opening up Famagusta. They have even called on the residents of this area to demand compensation or take back their homes, under Turkish Cypriot administration and under the control of the so-called "police" of the pseudo-state.
That is, the private properties in the area belonging to Greek Cypriots that were stolen by Attila in the 1974 fighting will be returned (as announced by Erdogan himself) to 36 Greek Cypriots who have already applied to the self-styled Property Commission. The rightful owners have three options, as jointly defined by Erdogan and Tatar: restitution, compensation or exchange. Ankara's aim is to increase the number of claimants, who will indirectly recognize the Turkish Cypriot administration in occupied Famagusta.
Thus, by removing 3.5% of the enclosed town of Varosha from the status of an occupied military zone, the Turkish side is moving on to the second part of the opening of Varosha, while EU sanctions are pending against Turkey for this illegal action. And let Tatar declare that in this way "life in Varosha begins again...". But what life and in which (occupied) Varosha?
