The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN, Ambassador Andreas Hadjichrysanthou, represented the Republic of Cyprus on 1 March 2022 at the 11th Emergency Special Session of the UN General Assembly on Ukraine.[/B]

In his intervention, Mr. Hadjichrysanthou stressed that the Republic of Cyprus expresses its solidarity with Ukraine and supports its unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. He also expressed the Republic of Cyprus' regret at the loss of life, human suffering and mass displacement caused by the hostilities as a consequence of the war in Ukraine, which Cyprus has been experiencing for almost 50 years.

He stressed that Cyprus condemns any breach of international peace and security caused by military action by one state against the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of another state. He added that as a small state, Cyprus relies for its security on the rules-based world order with the United Nations at its core. He indicated that Cyprus is deeply concerned about the effectiveness of the collective security system.

The Permanent Representative stressed the need for full compliance with international humanitarian law and the immediate ceasefire with the withdrawal of Russian military forces from Ukrainian territory. He also reiterated the urgent need to reverse illegal actions, including Russia's recognition of the self-declared independence of the two regions in eastern Ukraine.

Mr. Hadjichrysanthou also expressed grave concern about the increased level of nuclear threat from Russia.

In conclusion, he stressed that Cyprus, as a victim of foreign invasion and continued occupation, stresses that the situation in Ukraine constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and undermines the international order and that the only way out is diplomacy and not war.
