Almost 900 out-of-court complaints, half of them for speeding in two days across Cyprus A 24-year-old "ralist" was arrested in Larnaca Police informs

A total of 871 out-of-court complaints for various traffic offences, resulted from traffic law road checks carried out over the weekend by members of the Special Motorcycle Squad (E.O.M.O., the Headquarters and Avdimou Road Accident Prevention Units (RAPUs) and members of the Traffic Police, on motorways and secondary roads nationwide over the weekend.

The nationwide traffic checks were carried out between the hours of 6am on Friday 11/02/22 and 6am today Sunday 13/02/2022, as part of the prevention of road traffic collisions, the deterrence and suppression of motor vehicle and motorcycle nuisance offences and youth offending.

The majority of the complaints concerned offences which are proven to be the main causes of serious and fatal road traffic collisions. Of these, 436 complaints stand out, which were carried out for exceeding the speed limit.

Also worthy of mention are the complaints concerning driving with hands free (using a mobile phone), for which police members made 48 complaints nationwide.

Police members also made a total of 95 complaints for offences involving driving under the influence of alcohol, non-use of seat belts and parking in disabled parking spaces.

In addition, another 292 out-of-court complaints were received for various other traffic offences.

Moreover, in Larnaca province, at around 11.15pm yesterday, while members of the Road Accident Prevention Unit (RAPU) Headquarters were conducting a traffic control on Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue, a car was intercepted which was travelling at a speed of 95 km/h instead of 50 km/h. The 24-year-old driver was arrested for a self-incriminating offence and after being charged in writing, he was released to be summoned later.



During the above traffic control on Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue,a vehicle driven by a 23-year-old man without a driver's license, safety certificate and while it was declared stationary was also detected. The vehicle in question was detained by members of the traffic police for further investigation.

Targeted traffic police checks continue daily, throughout the twenty-four hour period, on all roads nationwide. The sole objective is to inculcate proper road awareness among all road users and to prevent fatal and serious traffic collisions.
