AKEL's proposals for reducing the price of electricity Letter from the General Secretary of AKEL to the Minister of Energy What are they and what do they include
Following yesterday's meeting of the General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou with the President of the Republic on energy issues, Stefanos Stefanou today sent a letter to the Minister of Energy.
The Secretary General of AKEL requests that a meeting be arranged with the Minister to discuss AKEL's proposals for reducing the price of electricity.
The letter is as follows:
"Following our meeting with the President of the Republic on Tuesday 1 February, and the President's instructions to arrange a meeting with a delegation of AKEL for further discussion of energy issues, we are submitting to you in writing the proposals in brief.
At the meeting you will arrange, we will present in more detail the actions we propose to contain and reduce the price of electricity, as well as other relevant energy issues.
Indicatively, we mention the following. We note the success of the bidding competition launched in 2012 in which prices ranging from 7.4 to 9.5 cents/KWh were submitted, while under the Ministry's 2018 Plan, investors are currently receiving much higher prices, beyond 16 cents/KWh.
- Use part of the revenues from the auctioning of greenhouse gas emission allowances granted to us by the EU to abolish the renewable energy fee and the public service charge paid by consumers. In addition, allocating some of this revenue to tackle the worsening energy poverty. This is in line with EU guidelines as well as legislation to allocate at least 50% of the auction revenues to specific actions in this direction.
- No obstacles should be placed in the way of the development of RES and storage projects by AHK, which clearly needs to be regulated and supervised to avoid abuse of the power position it holds.
We look forward to your response to arrange a meeting."
