A meeting with a delegation of the Committee for the Establishment and Maintenance of the Register of Resistance Fighters was held today by the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou.
Welcoming the delegation, Stefanos Stefanou stressed that as AKEL we pay tribute to these people and to all patriotic democrats who, at the risk of their lives, defended legitimacy, democracy and ultimately our country from those who conspired to destroy it, as they did with the coup and the invasion.
The C.E. of AKEL assured that the demands made by the committee to the state and the state are absolutely correct and AKEL will work towards their satisfaction. Several of them are ordered by the state, on the basis of laws, to be implemented, which has not been done so far.
AKEL will continue to fight for the defence of historical truth, against the distortion that various circles are attempting and in which the right-wing and the government are involved, but also the fight so that younger people learn and older people remember what happened in this place and what led to the tragedy. It is a debt to all those who fought and especially to those who gave their lives to defend democracy.
It is our promise to all these fighters of the resistance that AKEL will continue to sharpen historical memory against oblivion, which is fuelled by the passage of time.
