"No one can ignore the real motives of those who played a leading role in the removal of Turkish Cypriot MEP Niyazi Kiziljirek from the University of Cyprus," AKEL said in a written statement.
It notes that "this targeting started in 2019, from the day Niyazi Kiziljirek participated in the AKEL electoral list".
"He was targeted on two fronts", AKEL continues, "both by the chauvinist circles of the Turkish Cypriot community in the occupied territories, who vilified him as a "traitor, an agent of the Greeks", and by the Greek Cypriot right and far-right who accused him of being an "agent of Erdogan". No one forgets the attack launched at the time by the leadership of DISY and ELAM."
"They are the same people who, from the day of his election, have been systematically pushing to force the University to remove the academic MEP. And they succeeded - by swallowing the camel and refining the cone - on the basis of an article of an anachronistic, possibly even unconstitutional, discriminatory legislation which, as everyone says, must be changed," AKEL adds.
"This development has confirmed the nationalist allergies of the Greek Cypriot right", it concludes.
