Sadness at AKEL over the death of Louki Aletras The historic member of AKEL passed away on Saturday morning

AKEL sadly bids farewell to historic member of AKEL, Louki Aletras, who passed away today.

As stated in a statement, Loukis Aletras linked his entire life with AKEL and the Cypriot Left, with its ideology and visions. "He sealed this path with selfless dedication and faith in the rights of the working people and our country."

The deceased was organised in the class trade union movement and participated in the workers' struggles of the 1940s-50s.

He took part in the Founding Congress of the AON, the forerunner of the EDON. He was repeatedly imprisoned for his political activity during the years of colonialism and was among the 135 Party cadres imprisoned in December 1955 when the British outlawed AKEL. He served AKEL from various positions of responsibility and was for years a member of the Party's top leadership, the Political Bureau and the Secretariat of the C.E. Until the end of his life he remained an active and committed AKEList.

"AKEL honours with gratitude and respect Louki Aletras and his contribution to the people and the homeland. It expresses its sincere condolences to the family of comrade Louki."
