Grief at AKEL over the death of Lena Melanidou "We bid farewell to the maestro of peace"

We have learned with great sadness of the unexpected death of Lena Melanidou, musician and conductor of the "Bicommunal Choir for Peace in Cyprus", AKEL says.

Lena's loss is a huge loss both for the cultural events of Cyprus but especially for the Reunification movement. "Lena since 1998 as conductor of the Bicommunal Choir inspired dozens of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to sing for the cause of peace and hope for the reunification of Cyprus. She has been a trademark of the choir from its first difficult years of operation until today."

"AKEL has worked closely with Lena herself and the Bicommunal Choir, supporting their multifaceted work. In this direction, we as AKEL will continue to support cultural action for peace-building."

As noted in the statement, sadly, Lena leaves without seeing the vision of the reunification of our country come to fruition. Our promise is to continue building the vision and the prospect of a reunited federal Cyprus.

"AKEL expresses its sincere condolences to her relatives as well as to those who have passed through the Bicommunal Choir over the years," it concludes.
