AKEL statement on developments in Ukraine

AKEL issued a statement regarding the dysfunctional situation in Ukraine, pointing out that the dramatic tension and militarisation in Eastern Europe constitute a threat to Europe, while avoiding mentioning Russia.

The statement itself:

"The latest developments on the Ukrainian front constitute a further deterioration of tension and add to the explosive landscape prevailing in Eastern Europe. Our position is that international law and in particular the principle of territorial integrity of states must be respected by all states of the world. The Minsk Agreements could and still can provide a peaceful way forward and should not be abandoned.

The dramatic tension and militarisation in Eastern Europe is a threat to Europe and the whole world. Today, the priority is to protect the peace and security of the European continent and the world. The path of diplomacy and dialogue must not be abandoned.

The government must assess and prepare for the consequences for Cyprus of the developments in Ukraine."
