AKEL strongly criticises the General Prosecutor's Office and the Government for the spy van case
AKEL has launched a firestorm against the Legal Service and the Government in the aftermath of the curtain-raiser in the high-profile spy van case, where the Court imposed a fine on the company, while the three defendants were acquitted of the charges.
In its statement, the left-wing party said, "The dark case of the black van was closed today with the imposition of a €76,000 fine on the company. This conclusion of the case is a disgrace to the rule of law in the country as it confirms that blatant scandals go virtually unpunished. The government and the Attorney General's Office are irretrievably exposed."
He adds that the acquittal of Israeli Tal Dillian and the other two persons from the indictment remains unanswered to date.
"The case of the black van also proved to be a crime without criminals. The Cypriot people know that the illegal mechanism of the van circulated unchecked through the streets of the country watching thousands of citizens. They know that this black van is a blow to the rule of law, the national security of the country, democracy and human rights in our country."
The Cypriot people, he adds, do not want their country to be a closed vineyard for spying, surveillance and mass eavesdropping, nor a state of impunity. "The Syriza government delivers a humiliated state and its institutions shattered", the statement concludes.
