Construction of the 6th Power Generation Unit at Vasilikos Power Plant Signing of an agreement between AHK and TERNA S.A. Significant contribution to ensuring the adequacy of electricity production
An important cooperation agreement between the Cyprus Electricity Authority and TERNA S.A, was signed on Wednesday 16 February at the Head Office of AHK, by the President of the Board of Directors of AHK, Mrs. Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou and the Vice President of TERNA S.A, Mr. Ioannis Stephanatos, in the presence of the Director of Energy, Mr. Charalambos Roussos, who represented the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry.
The subject of the agreement is the construction of the 6th Power Generation Unit at the Vasilikos Power Plant, which is part of the Development Programme of the Basic Regulated Generation Activity. The new, modern and efficient Generation Unit, with a capacity of 160MW, will be added to the existing total generation capacity of AHK, from conventional Units, and will contribute to ensuring the sufficiency of electricity generation and ensuring the necessary reserve capacity. The Unit will consist of two gas turbines, two heat recovery boilers and one steam turbine, with a total maximum capacity of 160MW, and will operate with natural gas as the main fuel, and will also have the possibility to operate with refined diesel as an alternative fuel.
AHK, following all legal procedures, has launched in 2020 a Community Tender for the installation of the new Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Unit at Vasilikos Gas Turbine Station. The tenders were submitted in September 2020 and the tender was awarded in 2021 to TERNA S.A. The Project includes design, supply, installation, testing and initial operation. Based on the project completion schedule, the new Generating Plant is expected to be in commercial operation before the summer season of 2024.
The tender also includes the signing of a Contract with the construction company for the long-term maintenance of the two gas turbines of the new plant, until the completion of their first major maintenance.
On behalf of the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, the Director of Energy, Mr. Roussos confirmed the Ministry's support to the multifaceted plans of the Cyprus Electricity Authority, related both to the development of generation and the transmission and distribution networks. The ultimate goal of the Ministry is the uninterrupted supply of electricity and the gradual transition of our country to green energy. According to Mr. Rousso, "AHK is the main energy pillar of the country, whose driving force comes from the remarkable staff of the organization. The people of AHK constantly prove that they can work in an organized, flexible and professional manner, implementing the requirements for the well-meaning interests of the Republic of Cyprus."
The President of the Board of Directors of AHK, Ms. Theodosiou stressed that: "In a wider environment that is constantly changing, AHK is rapidly preparing itself to contribute to ensuring adequate production of a vital commodity such as electricity. We look forward to the arrival of natural gas and at the same time we are committed to the objective of exploiting renewable energy sources. At a time of great and complex challenges, AHK is investing not only in its future, but also in the energy future of Cyprus. Because the development project of AHK is a project that broadens the energy horizon of our country. Creating new conditions of progress and prosperity for all."
On behalf of TERNA S.A., Mr. Efstathios Natsis, Director of Development of Projects Abroad, said that this project is very important for AEC and the Republic of Cyprus concerning the national energy sufficiency and modernization and the environmental upgrading of the country.

He also made special reference to the fundamental cooperation between TERNA S.A. and SIEMENS, which will supply the equipment for the Plant and which was represented by Mr. Michalis Kiumourtzidis, Director of Energy Projects for Greece and Cyprus. Mr. Natsis assured that the construction prowess and excellence of TERNA, combined with the reliability of SIEMENS, is the guarantee that the 6th Unit will be constructed in an optimal way and will be a technological jewel for AHK and the Republic of Cyprus.
