It remains in effect until 5.00pm today, Friday, the yellow warning for isolated severe thunderstorms, issued yesterday by the Cyprus Meteorological Department.

Isolated severe thunderstorms are expected to affect the area from time to time, the warning said. Rain intensity, it added, is expected to range between 35 and 50 millimetres per hour, while hail is likely.

Weather in detail

Low pressure is affecting the area. The snow depth at Troodos Square[/B], around five o'clock this morning, was 85 cm.

Today, initially, the weather will be partly cloudy and partly mostly cloudy and showers are expected locally mainly in the western half of the island. Gradually the weather will become mainly cloudy with localised showers and isolated thunderstorms, becoming less intense in the afternoon. Snow or sleet will fall on the higher peaks of the Troodos and locally in the higher mountains. In the afternoon, sparse dust is likely in the atmosphere at times. Winds will be mainly southwest to northwest and in the afternoon mainly northwest to north, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will be a little rough to choppy. The temperature will rise to around 15 degrees inland, around 16 degrees on the coast and around 6 degrees in the higher mountains.

Tonight there will be partly cloudy spells, initially possible giving isolated light showers or light snowfall in the higher mountains. Winds will blow mainly from the northwest, light 3 and initially locally up to moderate 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will be a little choppy and locally up to choppy. The temperature will drop to around 4 degrees inland, around 8 on the coast and minus one in the higher mountains, where frost is expected to form.

On Monday there will be patchy clouds.The temperature will gradually rise, to be slightly above the average climatic values.
