An exotic species smuggler in the US had 52 live snakes and lizards hidden in his pants

Snakes and horned lizards hidden in his pants, was the brazen method of a smuggler of exotic species who tried to import these reptiles into the United States. When the 30-year-old American arrived in late February at the Mexican border near San Diego, customs officials discovered a total of 52 live reptiles on him.

It is unknown if some suspicious movement under his clothes caught the attention of customs officials who asked him to stand aside to be searched. The smuggler had enclosed the reptiles - nine snakes and 43 horned lizards - in plastic bags and hid them under his jacket, in his pants pockets and at crotch level, U.S. Customs authorities explained.

Smugglers are ready to try any method to import their products in this case it was live reptiles, commented Sidney Ackle, an official of the San Diego Customs Service.

The animals, some of which belong to endangered species, are being monitored by veterinarians. The 30-year-old smuggler was arrested.
