Gioacchino Gammino had managed to escape to Spain, but a photo on Google Maps alerted the Italian authorities
The luck that Gioacchino Gammino had at his side for over 20 years, ended on 17 December when he was arrested by Italian detectives in Spain where he had taken refuge. What gave him away? A photo on Google Maps
The now 60-year-old man was a well-known member of the Sicilian mafia, having first been arrested in 1984, and in 1995 he was charged with murder but managed to escape to Barcelona where he was arrested three years later.
In 2002 he escaped from prison in Rome and managed to travel again to Spain and specifically to Galapagar, north of Madrid, where he completely changed his identity and philosophy.
He got a job in a restaurant as a chef and opened a grocery store right next door, as the years went by and the authorities were unable to track him down. Until a few months ago when they spotted a photo on Google Maps that they thought was him.
Although it's been two decades since he was last seen, a distinctive mark on his face was enough to identify that it was indeed him and eventually get him arrested.
According to the Telegraph, when he was handcuffed, the first thing he told the cops was this: "How did you find me? I haven't contacted my family in over 10 years."
[/P]But Google had betrayed him
