A Christmas tree started the deadly fire in Philadelphia that killed 13 people

A Christmas tree burst into flames under unclear circumstances inside an apartment building, was the source of the large fire in Philadelphia, USA, that caused the deaths of 13 people, the fire chief in the US metropolis said yesterday, Tuesday, citing the findings of a preliminary investigation into the cause of the tragedy.

The fire broke out around 6:30 a.m. (local time) Wednesday morning on the second floor of an apartment building in the Fairmont neighborhood. This tragedy, along with Sunday's also deadly fire in New York City that claimed the lives of 17 people, including eight children, brought the issue of the adequacy of safety measures in complexes where low-income families live to the forefront.

According to the Philadelphia Fire Department, 26 people lived in the apartment building, which was intended to house two families. There was conflicting information that came to light about smoke detectors in the building. Fire officials said that four detectors had been installed, which were last checked in 2020.

For his part, the executive vice president of the Philadelphia Housing Authority told reporters that the smoke detectors in that building were six and had last been checked in May 2021.
