A 6-year-old girl who had been missing since 2019 was found alive and well yesterday in New York City. Little Paisley Schultis was found by police officers in a hidden room under a staircase at a home in Saugerties in Ulster County.
The 6-year-old, authorities say, had been abducted by her parents when they lost custody of her in 2019 and had kept her hidden at her grandfather's house ever since.
However, a tip led detectives to Saugerties and there they discovered that under the wooden steps leading to the basement of the home was a small room and inside was Paisley.
"Detectives used a tool to remove several of the wooden steps and then saw a pair of tiny feet. After removing several more steps, the child and her abductor were discovered inside a makeshift room," police said."
Paisley was 4 years old when her parents lost custody of her and her older sister in "Cayuga Heights," which is more than 200 miles from where the girl was found, according to the local Daily Freeman. It is unclear why the parents had lost custody of the children. The older daughter, who was in school the day of the abduction, had ended up with another family, while the younger daughter had gone missing the day her parents moved to the Saugerties, police said.
The girl's parents, Kirk Schultis and Kimberly Cooper, and her grandfather face charges of interference with custody and endangering a minor.
Paisley was examined by doctors and found to be in good health before being released into the custody of her legal guardian and older sister at an undisclosed location. The little girl identified her older sister, police said.
According to Saugerties Police Chief Joseph Sinagra, the 6-year-old did not attend school during those two years and did not receive education at her grandfather's home, where she was hidden.
