Police investigate a new case of internet fraud

Police investigate a new case of internet fraud, following a complaint by a 58-year-old woman.

As reported today by the complainant, at the Limassol CID, on February 08, she received a message from the email account of the Director of the company where she works, requesting her to transfer the sum of $10,000 from the company's bank account in Cyprus to an account registered in a bank in the United States.

The complainant followed the instructions she received via this message and proceeded to transfer the money, however, when on February 17, the accounting department checked with the Director of the company, it was found that the Director had never sent such an instruction via email.

The complainant's complaint indicates that, a suspicious person gained access to the email account of the Director of the company where the 58-year-old complainant works and sent the malicious message to her, thereby extracting the $10,000.

The Police, on the occasion of this new incident of online fraud, urges the public to be cautious, especially when it comes to making payments of large, as well as smaller amounts of money, to bank accounts referred to them in any emails.

To protect yourself from any form of online fraud, before proceeding to make a payment, withdrawal or even transfer of funds, check whether these instructions mentioned in any message you have received actually come from your beneficiary partner or colleague.

Contact them by telephone to verify these instructions. For this contact, use a telephone number from a previous contact. Never use the contact details given in the message through which you were given the suspicious instructions.
