A man is sentenced to five years in prison for domestic violence offences

The Paphos Permanent Court of Cassation, on January 5, imposed prison sentences, with a maximum sentence of 5 years imprisonment, on a defendant who pleaded guilty to domestic violence offences involving his wife.

According to a statement of the Paphos Court of Cassation, the essential facts were extremely serious due to the injuries inflicted on the victim by the use of a knife on 3 consecutive occasions and in addition to the infliction of mental anguish from the abuse for a period of 5 months.

In its judgment, the Court of Cassation stated that "having regard to the facts underlying the present case, it was a fortunate coincidence that the fatal event did not occur for the complainant, either that no permanent functional damage remained to her, since on two of the occasions when the accusedstruck her she lost consciousness, or that even more serious injuries were not inflicted on her".

It was stressed that with the brutality of the accused, the complainant very rightly acted and resorted to a complaint.

Such behaviour when suppressed unfortunately proves that most of the time it also leads to subsequent incidents, the Court of Cassation noted.
