New arrest for case of importing large quantity of drugs 13 and 11-year prison sentences have already been imposed on three persons for importing drugs

A fourth suspect has been arrested in a case of importing large quantity of drugs, namely 27.5 kilograms of gross weight of cannabis, was arrested by the police, following new evidence against the suspect, a 30-year-old man. The 30-year-old was arrested yesterday Thursday and this morning he was brought before the Larnaca District Court, which, at the request of the police, issued an eight-day detention order for the purpose of investigating the case.

The large quantity of cannabis was imported into Cyprus last July, by two men aged 32 and 41, who arrived at Larnaca airport on the evening of July 3, on a flight from abroad.

For the importation of the drugs, relevant information had been received and evaluated by the Anti-Narcotics Service - YKAN.

Upon the arrival of the two suspects at Larnaca airport, members of the YKAN in cooperation with officials of the Customs Department, intercepted them for control and a search identified in the luggage of the 32-year-old, 22 nylon packages containing a total of 14 kg and 470 grams of cannabis gross weight, while in the luggage of the 41-year-old, 8 nylon packages containing cannabis with a gross weight of 13 kg and 39 grams.

As a result, the two suspects were arrested for offences of their own accord, while on the same evening a third suspect was arrested by court order, a 47-year-old man, who, according to the information obtained by the YKAN at the time, was the person who would receive the cannabis, weighing 23 kilograms and 443 grams net, as established by laboratory tests carried out subsequently.

A case of importation and possession of drugs for supply to other persons had been registered against the first three suspects for immediate trial, with the Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court finding the three defendants guilty.

On November 30, the Permanent Court of Cassation handed down 13-year prison sentences to the 47-year-old and 11-year sentences to the 32-year-old and 41-year-old.
