The Ministry of Health announces that today, 17 January 2022:
- 3 people have died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 684.
- 270 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of whom 94 are in serious condition. A proportion of 70.64% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
- 17 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an intensive care unit.
- A total of 138,351 tests for detection of the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test have been performed.
- 3,143 (positivity rate: 2.27%) new cases of COVID-19 were detected by the molecular (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 228,881.
Here are today's results in detail.
A. Deaths from COVID-19:
The 3 persons who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 were:
Male, aged 70 years, who died on 16 January at Limassol General Hospital.
Male, aged 91 years, who died on 17 January at Limassol General Hospital.
A man, aged 64, who died on 17 January at Paphos General Hospital.
Therefore, the total number of deaths with COVID-19 as the final cause is 684, of which:
- 430 males (62.9%), and
- 254 females (37.1%).
The average age of those who died from the disease is 76 years.
B. Inpatients:
In total, 270 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 94 are in serious condition or in PICU.
Of the 94 patients in serious condition, 34 are intubated, 6 are in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) off ventilator and 54 are in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Γ. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):
Of the 138,351 diagnoses performed, 10,024 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 128,327 by the antigen rapid test method, 3143 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:
- 89 cases from 1,744 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
- 65 cases out of 3,724 samples taken in the framework of passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
- 358 cases out of 3,928 samples taken through private initiative.
- 26 cases out of 358 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
- 1,666 cases out of 76,128 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
- 927 cases from 52,199 specimens tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
- 12 cases from 270 specimens obtained under the programme of referrals from Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through Public Health Clinics.
