The Family Violence Clinic in Paphos received 259 complaints in its first year of operation

Two hundred and fifty-nine (259) complaints were received by the Family Violence Clinic of the Paphos Police Directorate in its first year of operation.

According to Pafos Assistant Police Director Michael Ioannou, the Violence in the Family Cell in Pafos District started its operation on 15 February 2021 and has completed one year of operation, during which 259 complaints were made, with 290 complainants and 276 accused.

Mr. Ioannou added that 123 arrests have been made and 47 exclusion orders have been issued.

He said that in 66 other cases, restraining orders have been placed so that the perpetrator does not approach or disturb the victim in any way.

He explained that the Domestic Violence Unit based at the Pafos Crime Investigation Department handles complaints concerning the entire Pafos province, but noted that a complaint at the initial stages can be made, if the victim so wishes, at local police stations and then the investigation is continued by the Unit.

Ioannou also said that there is an officer in the echelon who monitors the activity of the members, noting that the members selected have been specially trained to know how to handle victims of such offences.

He also added that assistance is provided to them both during the investigation of the case and after the end of the investigation of the case in collaboration with other agencies involved such as Hospitals, Social Welfare Services with the support of psychologists and in each case depending on the country of origin of the victim, the assistance of an interpreter is provided.

All cases are investigated with all seriousness, with responsibility and police officers are sensitive in handling these serious cases which are a priority for the Police, he said.
