The first crossword puzzle was published on December 21, 1913 in the New York World newspaper.

It was created by Arthur Wynne, an English journalist who edited the newspaper's entertainment page. After exhausting and recycling all the puzzles available at the time, he created a rhombus-shaped puzzle that looked a lot like today's crossword puzzle.

Wan couldn't believe his eyes when, the day after its publication, the paper was flooded with hundreds of letters from readers, urgently requesting new crossword puzzles. The crossword craze had begun, and reached its peak in America after the end of World War I.

On November 2, 1924, the craze crossed the Atlantic and reached Europe, with the publication of the first crossword by the English newspaper the Sunday Express. In the 1930s it began to spread rapidly to all corners of the globe, including our country.

In World War II many English crossword puzzlers were used by Allied intelligence services to break Nazi codes.

Nowadays, the crossword is a constant. We find it everywhere, from newspapers and specialized magazines to the internet. Doctors believe that it is good for health, as it sharpens the mind and helps to avoid unpleasant conditions like Alzheimer's.
