René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laennec was born on 17 February 1781 in the town of Kenneper, Brittany. He was left an early maternal orphan and at the age of 12 his father sent him to his uncle Guillaume-Francois Laennec, who was a university doctor in Nantes. The young boy, who was distinguished for his intelligence, began studying medicine at a very early age under his uncle, which he interrupted at the urging of his father, who was a lawyer. He then began to study Greek and to write poetry. But medicine remained his great love, and at the age of 18 he began a new course of study in Paris with famous doctors of the day, such as Guillaume Dupitrain and Jean-Nicolas Corvisar.

In 1806 he was appointed to the Necker children's hospital in Paris and began teaching pathological anatomy to resident doctors. In 1815 he announced to his students the first results from the application of acoustics to the diagnosis of thoracic diseases. For this purpose he invented the stethoscope the following year.

In 1819 he published his "Traité de l auscultation médiate" ("Treatise on mediate auscultation"), which increased knowledge of pulmonary diseases. Laeneck also contributed to the understanding of diseases such as peritonitis, cirrhosis of the liver and melanoma, while his knowledge of Greek helped him to coin the medical terms 'cirrhosis' and 'melanoma', which have since become internationally accepted. In 1822 he became a lecturer at the College de France and the following year was promoted to professor.

René Laeneck died of tuberculosis in the town of Ploire, France, on 13 August 1826, at the age of 45.
