Mendelssohn conceived the idea of writing a violin concerto in 1838 and realized it on September 16, 1844, when he completed the work.
All this time he was in contact with his friend violinist Ferdinand David (1810-1873), who advised him on the composition of the violin solo parts.
It was only natural that David should be the soloist of the concerto at its first performance on 13 March 1845, in Leipzig's Gewandhaus Hall. Mendelssohn, who was to conduct the orchestra, was absent due to a health problem. He was, however, present at the second performance of the work, on 23 October 1845, when he took to the podium with David again as soloist.
The "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, in E minor, Op. 64" consists of three movements:
-Allegro molto appassionato
-Andante
-Allegretto non troppo-Allegro molto vivace
It lasts from 25 to 30 minutes and is written for solo violin and orchestra, including 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, drums and strings.
