The British government plans to pay a monthly allowance to those who open their homes to accommodate refugees from Ukraine in an attempt to cushion the impact of its stance on the fastest growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.

The new program, called "Homes for Ukraine", will allow refugees from war-torn Ukraine to go to Britain even if they have no relatives there, the Johnson government has announced. The British government will pay a monthly allowance of 350 pounds (418 euros) to anyone who can provide shelter for refugees for a minimum period of six months.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is seeking to portray Britain as a leader in mobilising the international community following the Russian invasion of Ukraine which Moscow calls a "special military operation" but his government has been criticised for delays in accepting refugees.

MPs from all political parties have strongly criticised the government's insistence on visas and biometric tests for Ukrainians before they reach Britain, stressing that it prioritises bureaucracy over the welfare of those fleeing their homeland to escape the war. Under the new plan, individuals, charities, businesses and community groups will be able to offer accommodation through a website by the end of next week.

"The UK is showing solidarity with Ukraine in its darkest hour and Britons understand the need to get as many people into safe places as quickly as possible," said Minister Michael Gove, responsible for housing, urging his compatriots "to join the national effort to support our Ukrainian friends. Together we can provide a safe home for those in desperate need."

Anyone who provides a room or house to refugees from Ukraine will have to prove that the accommodation meets standards and may have to undergo a criminal record check.[/B] Refugees from Ukraine could exceed 4 million, twice the initial estimates, the UNHCR warned last week.
