Dr Pavlos Antoniou was handed a four-month prison sentence by Nicosia district court on Monday after he was found guilty of assaulting a patient.
He was found guilty of indecent assault after the patient reported he kissed her four times as she was waking up from anaesthesia after a colonoscopy.
Antoniou claimed the allegations against him were false, saying that the woman had embraced and kissed him. Court rejected his testimony.
This is not the first time Antoniou was reported of and found guilty of similar offences.
As part of his effort to mitigate the sentence, his lawyer presented a statement from Antoniou’s “spiritual doctor” saying Antoniou was a man of good standing that had suffered greatly from the ordeal.
The “spiritual doctor” is a priest.
After a huge uproar, Antoniou was struck off from Gesy. Unless the Medical Association strips him of his licence, he is still free to practise medicine in the private sector.
The association pledged to look into the matter as soon as the court proceedings come to a close.
