The Supreme Court recently upheld a first instance judgment for defamation against MP Zacharias Koulias against former Agriculture Minister Kostas Themistocleous, but reduced the damages to €15,000 from €25,000 originally awarded.
The case dates back to 2006 when the disputed statements were made by Mr Koulias in a radio programme, was heard at first instance in 2008 and on appeal in 2012 and retried at first instance in 2013 with the Court awarding damages of €25,000 plus interest and costs in favour of Mr Themistocleous. This was followed by an appeal to the ECHR by Mr Koulias against the decision of the Court of Appeal in 2012, a decision of the ECtHR in 2020 that there had been a violation of the right to a fair trial and an award of damages by the Republic of Cyprus in the amount of €9.800 paid, as well as an appeal for annulment of the 2020 Court of Appeal decision due to
