The Supreme Court ruled that the prison sentence imposed on a defendant was manifestly insufficient, following an appeal by the Attorney General's Office, according to a statement from the Attorney General's Office.

The Supreme Court accepted an appeal filed by the Attorney General of the Republic George Savvidis against a 2.5-year prison sentence imposed on a defendant who intentionally caused grievous bodily harm to a woman with whom he had previously had a love affair by shooting her twice with a shotgun.

Agreeing with the position of the Prosecutor General that the original sentence of 2.5 years imprisonment imposed by the Larnaca-Amohostou Permanent Criminal Court was manifestly inadequate and the consequent need to impose deterrent sentences, the Supreme Court, taking into account the gravity of the offence as well as the facts of
