Fifty years from now it is estimated that half of the six thousand mother tongues spoken today will be extinct, linguist George Georgiou told CNA, noting that the Cypriot dialect is considered the last living Greek, which has found new ways and ways to continue to exist despite the pressure it has been under, making it an "extra value" for all of us who speak it.

On the occasion of the February 21 World Mother Language Day, Mr. Georgiou said that this day "is precisely to remember and honor everyone's mother tongue, but mainly to emphasize the endangered languages, i.e. those that have few speakers and are in danger of disappearing."
