A small annual increase of 1% was recorded in January this year in the percentage of employees working in government services. This increase was mainly due to an increase in the number of temporary staff.
The 1% increase corresponds to 518 people, bringing the total number of staff in government departments to 53,382. The overall largest increase was of 2.2% and was recorded in the Education Service.
The increase in temporary staff is across all categories of staff, with the largest being in the Education Service (9.1%). The Security Forces (with 1.7%) and the Civil Service (0.3%) follow. Overall, the increase in temporary staff was in the order of 7%, representing 1,242 people, with the total number of temporary staff at 18,937, up from 17,695 in January 2021.
