[CNA] Prison sentences of up to 3.5 years for two persons from Turkey for assisting the transit of migrants to Cyprus

Sentences of 3.5 years, 4 years and 8 months imprisonment on three charges respectively, were imposed by the Nicosia Criminal Court on February 1 on two persons from Turkey, who admitted that in order to gain profit they assisted the entry of migrants into the territory of the Republic, namely 13 persons from Syria.

An announcement of the Legal Service issued today states that the offences of which the defendants were found guilty relate to assisting the illegal entry of persons of third country nationals into the territory of the Republic, smuggling of migrants in violation of international treaties, and transporting a person by sea in an unsafe or overloaded vessel in violation of articles of the Penal Code.

It is noted that the offences in the indictment were committed before the amendment of the relevant laws that increased the penalties from 8 to 15 years for
