The German economy contracted 0.7% in the fourth quarter of 2021, as supply chain problems and anti-corn virus restrictions took their toll on the eurozone's largest economy, according to official data released on Friday.
"After production rose in the summer despite supply chain problems and material shortages, the recovery of the German economy stalled due to the fourth wave of the coronavirus and tighter anti-coronavirus restrictive measures," Germany's federal statistics office, Destatis, said, according to the French News Agency.
The German economy had grown by 1.7 percent in the July-September quarter before reversing course in the second quarter, according to revised Destatis data.
