[CNA] General government deficit reduced to €409.1 million in 2021 or 1.8% of GDP, 16% increase in revenues

The general government deficit decreased in 2021 to €409.1 million or 1.8% of GDP for 2021, due to an impressive 16% increase in revenues, according to preliminary fiscal results prepared by the Statistical Office, compared to a deficit of €1,212.8 million or 5.6% of GDP in 2020.

Expenditure

In detail, total expenditure in January-December 2021 increased by €560.0 million (+5.8%) to €10,284.3 million, compared to €9,724.3 million in the corresponding period in 2020.

This increase in specific categories is due, according to the Statistical Office, to expenditure in the context of support measures to counter the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
