The Fire Service is improving its operational capacity through various exercises, said the Service's Press Spokesman Andreas Kettis today, adding that a petrochemical extinguishing exercise was held this morning at the Larnaca airport's petroleum facilities.
According to the scenario of the exercise around nine in the morning of February 9 and while extreme weather conditions prevailed in the area of Larnaca airport, lightning struck a tank of the Larnaca Aviation Fuelling System Ltd (LAFS) at the airport, causing it to burst and part of the roof of the tank to be ejected, simultaneously causing a fire of the material (JETA -1) in the tank.
The facility personnel immediately implemented the Emergency Action Plan by activating the fire systems
