ExxonMobil has begun removing US employees from Russia, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The removal involves personnel from the US energy giant's major oil and gas production operations on Sakhalin Island in Russia's Far East.

In 2021, Exxon employed more than 1,000 people across Russia with offices in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ekaterinburg and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, according to the company's website. It remains unclear so far how many staff will be removed from Russia.

ExxonMobil operates three large offshore oil and gas fields with operations based on Sakhalin Island, while it is moving ahead with plans to establish a liquefied natural gas export terminal in the area
