With a milestone implementation date of May 2024, Cyprus will have 20 new municipalities resulting from the merger of 30 existing municipalities and 63 communities, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement, calling it a historic milestone for local government in Cyprus and beyond.
In the Nicosia district 5 municipalities are created:
- Nicosia Municipality, based in Nicosia, consisting of the municipalities of Nicosia, Agios Dometios, Aglantzia and Engomi
- The Municipality of Lakatameia, based in Lakatameia, consisting of the municipalities of Lakatameia and Cheriou, as well as the communal settlement of Anthoupolis
- Municipality of Strovolos
- Municipality of Latsia-Geriu, based in Latsia, which consists of the municipalities of Latsia and Gerion
