Aspects of the transition from the Greco-Roman to the Byzantine period are brought to light by the Open University of Cyprus' excavation at Messene. The excavation research was carried out in the years 2020-2021 and focused on the study of an early Byzantine church and a medieval cemetery in the ancient city of Messina, in the Peloponnese.
The Undergraduate Programme "Studies in Greek Culture" of the Open University of Cyprus, led by Associate Professor George Deligiannakis and in collaboration with the Society of Messinian Archaeological Studies, under the direction of Emeritus Professor Petros Themelis, conducted a systematic excavation at a site where the ruins of a "Byzantine church" had previously been identified, east of the sacred mosque of Asclepius and which belonged to one of the few Byzantine/medieval parts of the city that had not previously
