Annual inflation in the United Kingdom soared to its highest level since 1992, according to data released on Wednesday, putting pressure on the cost of living and on the Bank of England to keep raising interest rates.
The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose to 5.5% in January, up from 5.4% in December, also a level not seen in almost three decades, Britain's Office for National Statistics (ONS) said in a statement.
The inflation rate is now at its highest level since March 1992, the ONS added.
