A 24-hour strike on Wednesday 19 January was decided by workers at the Fasouri Farm in reaction to the decision of the Ministry of Labour to give work permits to foreigners for agricultural work on the farm carried out by Cypriot workers.
According to an announcement by the SEGDAMELIN - PEO guild, the strikers will gather outside the Presidential Palace at 10:30am, when the Council of Ministers will meet, demanding a hearing and an explanation for the Labour Ministry's decisions.
In a letter addressed to Labour Minister Zeta Emilianidou on 7 January, the workers restated an earlier demand for the withdrawal of 15 foreigners' permits for agricultural work, stressing that the work on the land in question was being carried out by the existing Cypriot workers, who have previous experience in the field.
