The Minister welcomes the passage of the bill for the protection of persons who report acts of corruption
With the passage of the bill for the protection of persons who report violations of the law and in particular possible acts of corruption, a powerful security mechanism is created to encourage employees to report and disclose relevant information obtained in their work environment.
From today, employees in Cyprus who make a complaint to the relevant competent authority will enjoy full protection. No person will be subject to retaliation, such as, inter alia, dismissal, harassment and negative changes to their working conditions.
This Bill is part of our broader effort to fight corruption and is the first of three bills that create a strong framework for enhancing transparency. The two remaining bills before Parliament are the Establishment and Operation of the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority and Transparency in Public Decision-Making
This bill is the result of the efforts of the members of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Parliament. I hope that the cooperation and the goodwill shown by the parliamentary parties, by voting in favour of the bill, will lead us to the adoption of the two other bills pending before the Parliament, in order to create a comprehensive legal framework against corruption.
Finally, I would like to thank the Chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee, Mr. Nikos Tornaritis, who, through his dynamic handling, contributed substantially to the completion of the bill. Special thanks also to Councillor Mrs. Irini Charalambidou for her time and for her suggestions which contributed to the creation of a strong bill. At the same time, I would like to express my thanks to all members of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, the Legal Service and all stakeholders.
