The arrival this morning of a boat carrying 60 Syrian migrants (men, women and children), some of whom were in a bad condition and were taken to hospital for treatment, is unfortunately proof of what we have repeatedly raised about the danger to human lives in unsuitable boats, usually the victims of trafficking rings.
For this very reason, we urgently raised during the recent visit of the European Commissioner for Home Affairs the urgent need for the EU to take action by setting up a team of Europol, the Lebanese authorities and the Immigration and Aliens Department of the Cyprus Police for border surveillance in Lebanon.
Our initiative for a reassessment by the European Union of the Syrian regime, based on the actual conditions prevailing in the country, falls within the same framework. I intend to raise this issue again at tomorrow's Informal Meeting of Home Affairs Ministers in Brussels.
Migration is a complex problem with a humanitarian dimension. Every human life is precious and we must protect it.
