The stable course of our country's economy cannot and should not be put at risk on the altar of the pre-election expediency of those who invest in inexpensive slogans and reckless parochialism.
Our country has been endangered in the recent past by ignorance and disregard for risk because some have invested in the ephemeral, without caring about the consequences, because they were blinded instead of envisioning a developed and prosperous country. At the same time that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is warning about the consequences of horizontal measures, some people in Cyprus are unfortunately deliberately ignoring and indifferent. Fortunately, however, this time it is not the government that is saying that the crisis will pass us by. Fully aware of the criticality of the decisions to be taken, we will continue to proceed responsibly, soberly and with a concrete plan.
Growth in Cyprus today is above most of our European partners while inflation is now approaching 2%. Fiscal performance continues to be strong, significantly reducing public debt.
As the IMF itself notes, strong fiscal policy remains essential for macroeconomic stability. Based on strong revenue performance, the primary surplus increased in 2023 to 4.4 percent of GDP. This, together with strong growth, reduced public debt to 77 percent of GDP. Among other factors, fiscal responsibility, falling debt, strong cash buffers and recently demonstrated economic resilience have supported the credit rating upgrades and improved market sentiment.
This is the Cyprus we want, a model country with a sound financial system, a strong real economy. We envision a Cyprus of growth and prosperity, a modern country where the daily lives of our citizens are constantly improving and which lays a solid foundation for the future.
We will continue steadfastly on the path of development of our country, presenting policies and reforms that improve the everyday life of our citizens by addressing energy insecurity, providing incentives and tools for further penetration of RES, curbing inflationary trends, addressing the housing problem, as well as policies that enhance transparency and raise the name of our country internationally.
It is disturbing to see political forces negating themselves or, in other cases, confirming their bad selves by promoting populism and parochialism. Society is in crisis. The most important service to the country is responsible, prudent politics and honesty.
