The President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Nicos Christodoulides, paid a visit to Cairo, Egypt, where he had a private meeting with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
During the meeting of the two leaders, they discussed mainly the situation in the region, the common will and vision for de-escalation of the crisis, as well as the commitment to pursuing a political solution on the basis of two states, in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.
The President of the Republic referred in particular to Egypt's decisive role over time in this direction, both in the political dimension of the Middle East and in the context of providing humanitarian aid to the civilians of the Gaza Strip.
President Christodoulides discussed with President El-Sisi ways of increasing the flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip in order to address the humanitarian crisis.
In the context of general coordination for the provision of additional humanitarian assistance, the President of the Republic of Cyprus referred to specific aspects of the planning of the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus to establish a sea corridor for the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian assistance to the civilian population in Gaza.
The President of the Republic also informed President El-Sisi of the intention of a number of states to contribute to the implementation of the sea corridor and of the sending, in a first stage, of humanitarian assistance to Cyprus in the framework of The President of the Republic assured his counterpart of Cyprus' firm support for the strengthening of relations between the European Union and Egypt.
The two leaders reaffirmed the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries, the intention to convene a trilateral meeting between Cyprus, Egypt and Greece, as well as to hold the next Cyprus-Egypt Intergovernmental Summit in Cyprus in 2024, in order to achieve the common objectives that have been set.
After the visit to Cairo, the President of the Republic went to Amman, Jordan, where he had a meeting with King Abdullah II in the presence of the Crown Prince and then attended a working lunch hosted by the King.
The two leaders discussed at length developments in our region and exchanged views on international efforts to revitalize the Middle East peace process.
President Christodoulides discussed in detail with King Abdullah II the Cypriot initiative for a maritime humanitarian aid corridor, for which the King of Jordan has publicly expressed his support.
The President of the Republic and King Abdullah II agreed to remain in constant contact to promote the implementation of the initiative, as well as efforts to de-escalate and encourage the creation of a political horizon on the basis of the two-state solution.
They also jointly stressed, once again, the importance of respecting the status of the holy places of worship in Jerusalem under Jordanian tutelage.
