The President of the Republic Mr.Nikos Christodoulides had a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Mr.Rishi Sunak this afternoon.

The conversation focused on developments regarding the dispatch of humanitarian aid to Gaza via the sea corridor from Cyprus, regional developments, the migration issue and developments in the Cyprus problem.

President Christodoulides briefed the UK Prime Minister on the ongoing efforts of both the Republic of Cyprus and the partner countries to increase the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza within the framework of the Amalthea initiative. The UK Prime Minister acknowledged the value of the Republic of Cyprus' initiative, as well as the overall leadership role that Cyprus plays in the region, as demonstrated during the evacuation of civilians from Sudan and the catalytic role that Cyprus played at that time.

President Christodoulides briefed the UK Prime Minister on the situation in the current phase of the Cyprus problem and on the efforts our side is making to resume the talks from the point where they were interrupted. The President of the Republic referred to the constructive attitude of the Government, both with the announcement and implementation of the unilateral measures towards our Turkish Cypriot compatriots, and the positive message that Cyprus and the EU sent through the conclusions of the April European Council, through the linking of the Euro-Turkish issues with the achievement of progress on the Cyprus problem.

The two leaders also discussed migration and ways to deal effectively with the uncontrolled flow of irregular migrants, as well as issues related to regional developments in the turbulent Eastern Mediterranean region.

The President of the Republic and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom agreed to maintain frequent contact and keep each other informed of developments on issues of common interest to the two Governments.
