The President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, had a telephone conversation with the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. During the telephone conversation, President Christodoulides expressed his thanks to the Sheikh for the UAE's support to the Republic of Cyprus' "Amalthea" initiative to establish a maritime corridor to provide additional humanitarian assistance to the civilian population in Gaza. The contribution of the UAE and the Sheikh himself personally through his support for the initiative and through the provision of humanitarian assistance was a catalyst for the implementation of the initiative.
The President of the Republic briefed the Sheikh on the intensive preparatory work to provide an additional flow of humanitarian assistance to the civilian population of Gaza through the sea corridor, as an option complementary to existing and future land routes. He also conveyed thanks to UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for his close cooperation, and to UAE Deputy Foreign Minister Reem Al Hashimy, for her personal involvement and decisive efforts, with whom the Republic of Cyprus is in constant coordination as to the next steps to enhance the assistance to be sent.
Finally, the President of the Republic expressed to Sheikh the intention to receive him in Cyprus.
