[PIO] Written statement by the Government Spokesman Mr. Constantinos Letibiotis on the departure of the President of the Republic and the President

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, and the President of the European Commission, Ms Ursula von der Leyen, who will be in Cyprus tomorrow for the 20th anniversary of Cyprus' accession to the EU, will travel to Lebanon on Thursday, May 2, where they will meet with the country's political leadership.

President Christodoulides and President von der Leyen will travel together to Beirut on the morning of 2 May, where they will be officially received by Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

This will be followed by a trilateral meeting and then by expanded talks between the delegations of the three parties.

The main objective of the visit will be to provide political and economic support to Lebanon from the EU, to discuss how to address the challenges facing the country as a result of regional developments, the effective management of migration, as well as the implementation of the necessary reforms by Lebanon to promote the stability and prosperity of the country.

The President of the European Commission will present a package of financial support to Lebanon, the implementation of which was an initiative of President Christodoulides and the Republic of Cyprus and is a practical demonstration of the active role the EU can play in our region.

They will then make statements to the media.

Subsequently, the President of the Republic and the President of the European Commission will go to the Parliament, where they will have a meeting with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Mr. Later, the President of the Republic and Mrs von der Leyen will attend a lunch hosted in their honour by the Prime Minister of Lebanon.

President Christodoulides, who will be accompanied by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Interior, the Government Spokesman and the Commander of the CPS/CSA, will return to Cyprus in the afternoon of the same day.
