The Council of Ministers at today's meeting, in relation to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Plan of the Akamas National Forest Park, was informed about the field visit that will take place on Saturday 16 December to review the projects that have been implemented. During the visit, a re-evaluation will be carried out to determine the geometric standards and/or other elements of the route based on the recommendations of experts experienced in environmental impact assessment who have designed and implemented roads within protected areas.
The company was informed to stop any works until 18 December. Prior to the start of works, a notice will be issued for all types of works to inform the community, environmental organisations and local authorities.
Within January 2024, a further site visit and presentation of the approach will be made before the Local Authorities of the Greater Akamas region (communities and municipalities).
By March 2024 all the results and recommendations of the expert team will be presented and briefed to the Ad Hoc Committee of experts reviewing the Special Ecological Assessments (SEAs), in which all environmental organisations (NGOs) will participate.
The Council of Ministers today approved the establishment of a three-member Investigation Committee, which will conduct an administrative investigation to determine whether there are responsibilities in the planning, implementation, permitting and operation of a project in the Sylikou community.
The Committee will consist of a representative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, a representative of the Ministry of the Interior and a representative of the ETEK.
The administrative investigation was deemed appropriate following an audit conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior. The audit concerned allegations of illegal diversion of water from the Kouri River, construction and operation of illegal fish farming facilities, recreation centre and visitor accommodation, illegal encroachment of part of the development on state land and granting of a License for the Establishment and Operation of a Fish Farm in the community of Sylikos in an illegal manner.
The Council of Ministers approved the Research & Innovation Strategy and Action Plan for the period 2024-2026. The Strategy reflects the Government's commitment to promote and harness research and innovation as pillars of sustainable development that contribute to the modernization, attractiveness and competitiveness of the country.
The Strategy builds on the high momentum that our country has developed in the fields of research and innovation and aims at the next level of development, focusing on infrastructure utilization, an outward-looking approach and linking research with the productive fabric, the labour market and business In particular, the proposals of the Ministry of Finance for "Protection of the Financial Interests of the European Union" and "Action Plan for the registration and monitoring of liabilities of natural and legal persons" were approved, as well as the proposal of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry for "Approval of the Progress Report on the Completion of the Milestone of the Full Implementation and Full Functioning of the Legal and Institutional Framework for Insolvency".
With today's decisions of the Cabinet of Ministers, 20 milestones out of 22 in the 3rd payment request have been implemented, and it is included in the agenda of tomorrow's plenary session of the House of Representatives for voting.
